Lupus Walk Los Angeles

On most Saturdays in the fall Exposition Park is where Trojan fans assemble for the traditional ritual of tailgating, but on this Saturday Angelinos assembled at Exposition Park for a different cause. Thousands joined in the 2nd annual Lupus Walk Los Angeles. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that affects (1) out of every (200) Americans. After missing it last year, I was determined to walk the entire 3 miles this year. There were teams everywhere with Butterfly logos, signs, and banners. I slowly started to really absorb being surrounded by all of this positive support. It was in a sense aspiring to continue on and give an extra effort for the cause and my recovery.

Yet, as the “Yesi” Team stood waiting for the walk to start we realized at how many of the banners read “RIP”. My friend turned to me with a perplexed look on her face and asked me, “Yesi, people die from Lupus?” I sadly answered, “Yes.” I was amazed as well at how many people were walking for patients that had been killed by this disease. I noticed that all of the pictures were of young girls and as I started to walk I started to appreciate the fact that I was able to walk at this event and was getting healthy. As the cliché goes “the grass is always greener on the other side” and in my case I’m on the greener side and I’m really grateful.

So my rundown is that sometimes it is hard to appreciate the little things in life and in my case as a Lupus patient, I got a hard lesson in life. Therefore I am grateful for everything that I can do and for all of those that surround me. Thanks to everyone that came out to support! Much love!
